Non existent electricity bill for UK homeowner

14/01/2025 / Milton Keynes
The Lee family produce the energy required to power their home in the day and receive payments for the excess they export back to the grid. The result: always in credit with their energy bill.

There is a persistent and widespread rumour that photovoltaic systems aren't financially worthwhile.

“An electricity bill of £0 per month blows that idea out of the water.” Says David Lee, owner of a 5.76 kW system in Buckingham, United Kingdom.

This is when you take both the cost savings and export tariff that the family receive from their energy company into account. They will have broken even in just a little over six years*. They are currently two years in.

Designed and installed by Fronius System Partner, Eco Energy Environment, a Fronius GEN24 Plus 5.0 inverter was placed at the heart of the system.

This converts the electricity generated from DC to AC so it can be used in the home. Generating this energy are 16 Solarwatt Classic 360W panels, mounted on the south-facing roof.

The system produces approximately 5000 kWh per year.

“The first thing we realised was how much credit we were in with our energy company. We got a refund, and drastically lowered our monthly payments,” says David. “That’s when we really started noticing the savings. What’s more, we have the same provider for gas, so export payments we get are credited to the account and therefore contribute towards our heating bill.”

The family have also ensured that the system is future-proof, opting for a Fronius GEN24 Plus should they wish to introduce battery storage, EV charging or hot water heating at a later date.

“We are looking to move over to EV in the next couple of years, so will be able to use our excess solar to charge our vehicles.”

About the system:

  • 5.76kW PV system with a Fronius GEN24 Plus 5.0 inverter
  • 16x Solarwatt Classic 360W panels
  • Produces an annual yield of approx 5000kWh with excess energy being sold back to the grid which is then offset against grid energy requirements
  • Future ready for battery storage due to hybrid GEN24 Plus inverter
